Pediatric dentistry
Pediatric dentistry
A pediatric patient can be challenging, and we understand that well. Some children happily jump into the chair, while others may be scared or resistant.
We are prepared for this and strive to approach each child with patience, respect, and love.
First visits are important for parents as well. They receive valuable information and tips regarding cleaning and diet, which helps them avoid mistakes and the development of cavities later on.
We recommend two visits a year for children, as cavities in primary teeth progress much faster and more aggressively than in permanent teeth.
To the dentist without fear
It is ideal for a child to visit the clinic for the first time when their first tooth has erupted or at least when nothing hurts. This way, we can calmly get to know each other; the child can explore the clinic, meet the doctor and the nurse, ride in the chair, brush the teeth of a stuffed animal, watch a cartoon, and show their teeth. As a reward for their bravery, they receive a small treat.
This helps us build trust and a relationship. Subsequent visits are then seen by the children as a regular and normal routine. If a child needs to undergo a procedure during future visits, we prepare them using the “tell-show-do” technique during the initial examination, so they know what to expect.
The role of the parent is also very important. Please do not scare children about the dentist; if you have bad and traumatic experiences from the clinic, do not talk about them in front of the children. Visits to the dentist today are completely different from what you experienced in your childhood. However, it is also not appropriate to tell the child that nothing will happen at the dentist, because something will indeed be done. At the very least, we will be looking into their open mouth. If a child perceives this as a lie, they will trust us less, which will disrupt future cooperation.
How a child’s examination proceeds
The child can be examined in the chair with a parent or alone. We examine the mouth using magnifying glasses, mirrors, light, and air.
By around the age of 3, spaces between the teeth close, creating contacts and areas that are very susceptible to cavities.
If a child has closed spaces, it is advisable to take X-rays to diagnose interproximal cavities that are not visible to the naked eye in the early stages. Based on the examination and X-rays, we summarize the condition of the teeth, bite, mucous membranes, and hygiene, and instruct on proper tooth brushing. If the child is able, we invite them for pediatric dental hygiene and agree on the next steps for treatment.
Treatments for children that we perform
In our clinic, we treat children from the youngest age. We perform the following procedures:
- Cavity treatment with fillings (using magnification, rubber dam, and local anesthesia)
- Endodontics – pulpotomy, pulpectomy (when the cavity affects the dental nerve and the tooth hurts)
- Tooth extractions
- Treatment without drilling – Hall and SMART techniques, strip crowns for front teeth
- Silver impregnation to stop cavities
- Sealing of teeth
- Pediatric dental hygiene
- Space maintainers
- Treatment of uncooperative children
Fearful and uncooperative children
For the most fearful children, those who cannot adequately cooperate, or who require extensive procedures, and in acute cases where immediate action is necessary and there is no room for trial and practice, we use sedation methods such as conscious sedation with syrup, nitrous oxide, and general anesthesia.
We describe these methods in more detail in a separate icon.
